Target Audience

Target Audience

This entry is about my journey with my choice on target audience.

Website

For my website and app, I decided to look at children as a target audience, because I wanted to try and encourage children to start collecting badges as they're the next generation and the kids of tomorrow I wanted to try and get them collecting an old fashioned keepsake and to try and engage them with badges.

I then found that when I am designing my website, considering the fact I don't know much about children due to being the youngest in household and grew up with older family members I don't really know much about what children like especially children of today. So I found designing the website for children a real struggle. this is a long story short but...

As for making the app, I felt worked far better than making website for children, because the app is simple, colourful, with a limited amount of text and colour scheme worked fairly well for capturing their eye.

But when I was making the website, I was hoping I would create something in the same sort of aesthetic as the app prototype I made, but I tried 3 different ways I could make my website, I tried with Adobe XD but the problem I had with that is in my feedback I got advice from tutors saying "Make the video the hero" so, I desperately wanted to include my video in the website but unfortunately the programme doesn't allow video footage so I had to put that idea to bed... I then found a website builder called, site Web-den which was going decently till I found out I'd have to pay for it monthly, to be published so again had to put that to bed too then my third attempt on building a website was on Wix and this is where I had to decide on changing my audience... as after looking at children's illustrative book typography, using the "PLAY" aesthetic which was the most childlike font I could go with.

I tried a variation with blackened background which I quite liked but wasn't child-friendly, I then changed the aesthetic and colour scheme to whites, pinks, blues and light colours, but no matter what sort of footage I'm creating it isn't in the aesthetics for children and after getting some feedback from various people, they've said the they wouldn't show their kids the website because its too advanced for children and said its more for teenagers unfortunately the struggle keeping my website child friendly seeing as I don't know much about children as I was one of the youngest children in my upbringing, with majority of my cousins are older than me and only 2 of my cousins are younger than me but not by much, so my knowledge for children is very low unfortunately seeing as i've had various people say this website Is more suitable for teenagers I think that's going to be my audience, the advantage for that is I won't have to change my website drastically but will have to change minor aesthetics to best suit the teenage aesthetics.

Here's some feedback from my sister about my website:

Feedback from my sister with evidence her opinion on my website and the reasons as to why I changed my target audience.

"Your website is much more suitable for teenagers than for children" ~ Jordan, Tutor.

So because of that I have changed my target audience to teenagers, It was a much better descion because it enabled me to figure out a purpose on my website weather I educate or entertain my audience or a mix of both, I changed my audience because I have not long passed my teens and it was much easier for me due to the fact my upbringing has even mostly around older people with older siblings and cousins which also makes me struggle to know children especially because I am not good with children. As I mentioned previously.

Publication

With my Publication I wanted to try and base my target audience on the ages 50 and upwards as it is an audience to which is the polar opposite to my target audience for the website, which is aimed for teenagers. I thought I try aiming it for a different audience to show that I can create Graphics for various audience not just one specified audience and I wanted to try and make my badge collecting heard by varied audiences and different people going along with different needs for the reasons of tradition, age group as well as thinking about other cultures and people around us and as my collection/anthology is a personal touch to me and the fact that my collection is a item seen in graphics quite commonly I also wanted to try and promote this item to vast audiences as it isn't a item of collecting you come across everyday and not one where little things like that can bring back memories yet it can also be a keepsake which doesn't take too much space and it also has meaningful object and I wanted to try and create artwork on something like that because although it is a subtle item but the same time, can be very meaningful.

Although having said that I find after starting brainstorming and after completing the website, which I kept it to be targeted for teens and younger adults but in this case although I wanted to go for an older audience I now find after brainstorming I decided to aim the audience at a varied age group around the ages 50 and up more to the fact  that teens are less likely to pick up a book willingly and read it, I find (As a matter of  opinion and research from my questionnaires and interviews)  in my generation I feel websites and apps are more for a younger generation and bools and publications are for the upper generation.

I now think because anyone can have badges, may like to read about badges as well as just collect them, depending on whether or not they like reading or not. But mainly for badge collectors or for anyone wants to learn about Badges generally, about the origin and what badge collecting can mean for budding collectors.
