Workshop with Paul
Workshop with Paul
With this entry it consists of work I did in a workshop I did with Paul in the near beginning of the project to help us understand the ropes behind the editorial and layout design process for creating a layout for a website. Just so we get the generics behind it and we did this layout design process on Adobe Indesign so we can learn a couple tricks and shortcuts with the layout and Paul showed me that on indesign there is like a arrow where the text continues and has overwritten the text and you cam right click and it'll add another box as a to be Continued kind of thing which was a good perk to know because it will help for my layout designs for when I am designing my publication as well as the website.
The Original Layout Design
You are likely to come across many different variations of this same piece but with different experiments where I have experimented with the hue saturations and blend modes on photoshop. For this layout I did like an A-Z out of badges I then had the text saying the word badges there as well which I thought would work because that's what the website is and then of that picture I've put a segment of it around the text that says A-Z in badges which I thought was quite quirky and I liked what I did there and then on the left hand side just a photo of my collection as well and this aesthetic I like small because it is simple it's very restrictive and at this point I was I'm in my audience at children for my website and this is why I used the colourful layout less of the text and more of the visual elements because I wanted to visually communicate rather than give children seeing the website bulks of writing to read and the reason why I got the words type of poster written on the very top of the page more just to see and understand how the division parts work on the websites when you go on the menu and get the different segments I did that more just to understand the spacing the and how it should be arranged how each space should have equal amount of space in between the tabs and it's more just a stimulation on what I would create if I was using Adobe XD
Here is where the experimentation process began where I carried this piece onto photo shop and I then started to experiment with a few situations and blend modes on the shop and layered the elements together to create an embodiment of experiments to try out different processes and seeing what I liked and disliked. With this version I looked at the darker colours and I wanted to see what they look like using different blend modes on this experiment by the look of this I think are used was a mix of overlay and Hard mix blend modes and experimented with the hue saturation, I quite like the aesthetic of this piece with how the dynamics of the pinks, whites and purples blend together and to create the layout and those colours together work well in the colour theory compartment and I like how powerful these colours are to create this layout.
With this next experiment I continued to experiment with the saturation with this piece and the thing I liked about this one was the added blackened coloured edge to this piece and what I liked about it was the fact it added boldness of this image and is more eye captivating and looking powerful imagery.
The only thing I would say about this piece is about the fact I don't think it is the most suitable piece for teenagers as apposed to children and at the moment I am decided to aim my website towards children's they're the people of tomorrow and therefore wanted to design experiments to grab the attention of the children so they'd be interested in the subject matter and because the children are the most likely to grow up using advanced technology.
With this variation I decoded to go with a similar aesthetic with the colour co-ordination to the imagery above, to add a splice experiment on old fashioned aesthetic mixed with a contemporary modernistic appearance with this version what I liked about it is the fact it incorporates the background photo of my badge collection because I like the vintage aesthetic but I also wanted to make it suitable for the modern eye.
For the next section of this entry is I went for a different stylistic choice I decided to go for an aesthetic that is more light hearted and much more aesthetically pleasing for children, with bright colours will enhance a suitable layout that is aesthetically pleasing for the children's eyes.
With this version I decided to go for a much more brighter and colourful aesthetic where I focused on the lighter hue saturations and the lighter blend modes. with this variation I looked at the pinks again and this aesthetic is much more suited for my audience range focusing on children although I like it for that reason this design looks more washed out and bleak- for me it wasn't my strongest design and is a bit of a feminine aesthetic and wouldn't interest all children as I was intending on designing artwork for children generally.
With this aesthetic here I continued experimenting with various hue saturations at very different shades of light and darkness, I went for experimenting with the combination of green and yellow with touches of blue and pink with this piece it isn't my favourite experiment, it looks abut on the weaker side the only thing I see as an effective is the squares around the type with badges and the word badges is legible but the design itself looks very bland and bleak.
With this piece here it reminds me of the Infrared Thermal cameras, in the colour co-ordinations you see in the science industry because of how the red and the yellow tints have spliced together showing the heat energy. This piece is more aesthetically pleasing with the colour choices and looks less bleak than the other images in this aesthetic above.
Thermal Cameras
This here is what I was referring to my experimentation above when I said it reminded me of the aesthetics of the inferred thermal cameras. With the multiple colours blended together.
This version here you could say is the negative version of the experiment above seeng as the colour pallet here is complimentary to the image above, I like this aesthetic because the blue as the over layered colouring is very strong and works well for this piece. I think this piece could work in terms if layout design for if were to create a website for children about badges.
With this piece I decided to go with a colourful aesthetic with this experimentation where I again experimented with different Hues and Saturations along with the different blend modes and this time I developed my experimental process further and I liked how the colour in this piece is very vibrant and the aesthetic works well for the eye of children the only thing i'd say is the text saying the word badges and the lettering a-z of badges isn't the most legible and weakens the imagery.
These two designs are some of my favourite designs that I have developed in this design aesthetic I like how I have gone with the design aesthetic of modern and old fashioned vintage appearance, this look I have created I think does appeal to children but I have myself to believe that this piece
This piece is one of my favourite designs I have on this entry I like the colour choice in this one I like how the residents overseen and overlapped by the vintage newspaper aesthetic background where the black and text really jumped out those stands out so the black texts almost gets the persons attention. I like how the word boobs isn't as dark or dominant as say the "MBJ" lettering but it is dominant in the ways of how the light in the text looks translucent aesthetic it still jumps out at you because of how the red bring the text out. This aesthetic I think would work better for the eye of teenagers, as the colours are bold, dominant and the image itself isn't very light hearted with the intense colour pallet on this piece.
with this piece I looked at another aesthetic using more colours where are the colours I have used in the original pace and again over at this photo with my image I had originally and I then experimented with different she's situations and blend modes to see what I can create.
With his PC it's basically the same variation aesthetic as the piece above except it's got better details on areas with highlighted sections such is the yellow patches in the design. The thing I'd say about the space as it's a bit chaotic and yes children like chaos and yes I like colour but I think this sort of content may be too much for the children that it might overwhelm them.
This piece here it's I've gone for the CMYK ink pallet aesthetic, with the colours I've used. which consist of black slight tint the yellow magenta and cyan and my life mix together they made the purple. I think this piece is interesting and is different for the rest of them but I do think there is chaotic and too chaotic there is like a borderline and I think that monster stopped it where it's a bit too much it just looks a bit exploded and you don't really know what's going on because there's so much going on you can't pick out so I'm not sure I'd even go for this as a design conceptI think this piece is interesting and is different for the rest of them but I do think there is chaotic and too chaotic which I think this piece is too much going on and for the wrong reasons and where it's a bit too much it just looks a bit exploded and you don't really know what's going on because there's so much going on you can't pick out so I'm not sure I'd even go for this as a design concept.
With this piece here I like what I did with it where I combined the colours of the original image with the background photo I like how I have placed the photo over the top of the original piece with the colours I made as a background and where the colours of the background image make this piece jump out and makes the piece stand out.
With this version I have a liking to I like how you can see more of the colours unless he is and how the colours have popped out a bit the only thing I'm not happy about with this piece is
where the blue bit of the 15 is I think that's a bit overpowering compare to like the square pot on the right hand side which I find the most impact with them that's what I like about this piece is that half of it is likeable and as an experiment it looks decent but not sure I would use it for my website or publication in this case.
This here is another one of my favourable aesthetic layouts, I do think it is chaotic and busy, if I were to use a piece like this for a website, application or publication I would rather use it as a background image but if I was doing a site for children I don't think I would use this piece but if it was for teens I would perhaps reconsider and use it as a backdrop. I like how minimalistic the colours are in this piece and at the same time unlike how vintage it also looks in the picture colours, I designed this as another experimentation.
With these variations I decided too use the paintbrush tool of the colour pallet on Photoshop and then changed the Hue Saturations and blend modes also to get this aesthetic below.
With this piece here I change the colour of the original image to blue and are use the paintbrush told to put the background photo over the top to get this affect I like the simplicity behind it where the colours shine out and I like the fact that it's only on Earth three colour bases and I think the blue black and the greyish white works well together as a piece on its own I think this piece will be best suited for like teenagers so I can't see the piece being one for children. I can't see the space being on for children.
With this piece I decided to add a change of colour to this piece above and I've put a pinky red gradient onto the background as opposed to blue gradient just to see what you look like in an experimentation or perspective I went for this just because I find that red black and grey usually work well together and I figured I'd give this variation a tryout.
With this piece I decided to combine both colours with the red and blue but in this version I change the blend mode so it gives the darker purple affects and the bright pink affects jump out with you so like the MBJ badge you see at the very front of the piece really jumps out as well as the U comes out at you it's one of those pieces almost like an optical piece if you like but if you know of a distance looking at this PC you say a lot of things jump out at you in different colours which is something that I quite liked but again I probably wouldn't go for this ascetic far is making a website or an application unless it is a background or just have it as a piece on its own but not put it in a website or publications such
With this variation I had a look at the warm colours again but looked at the Reds oranges greens and of course the greyscale colouring in the background I decided to go with this aesthetic more just as an experimentation but again are you couldn't see this being a feature piece on my website or publication and if it was it will be backdrop or I'll just be a piece on its own I think and I created this piece as a matter of experimentation and curiosity and to see what I can create and how I can develop the work we did with Paul, but it was good to have a look at in terms of experimentation and in terms of layout design
Here's a close-up of the piece above I wanted to focus on this as a piece on its own because I wanted it so I can view View finder sort of peace I'm not only that but the images of the badges and sells look very bold and they have a much more attention drawn to them seeing as my collection is badges I wanted the photo of the badges themselves in this design aesthetic.
With this variation I changed the aesthetic to a much lighter appearance, with the orange a look I am mate it's a bit daft to what I wanted it but it's a bit dark on the look on the vintage aesthetic which I was trying to create for this piece with this piece I wanted to incorporate the orange into the space as I wanted to give it the vintage look sadly I think I went for the wrong is static it looks a bit more than I switches not was going for at the time but it could work if I add this piece to my publication I would potentially use it as background for that.
With this piece I continued to play and experiment with the hue saturations and blend modes on Photoshop. Where I went for a brightened look still with different tints of orange, with the grayscale backdrop.
With this piece here it reminds me of the printing blocks you get and it looks as if they've been turned upside down and been photographed which I quite like and it has that sort of aesthetic to it this is probably one of my favourite pieces of that because I just like the aesthetic and I think it just works very well with a piece and if I were to put any of these places up on my publication website it would be this piece because it marks kind of I was trying to create with the images above with the combination of modernised graphics and the vintage aesthetic as well and I want to try and find something that splits in the middle.
With this piece it is basically the same as the previous piece above but developed further in the colour pallet where I have looked at different takes on this aesthetic by adding mire colour and blending them together r to create an aesthetically pleasing piece of graphics for the sake of the editorial process as to me the Editorial process isn't just about magazine, newspaper and publications it is also for me the journey you take when creating them and the things you learn along the way and this is why I did a multiple of this experimentation, to show my progressive journey to help me create some ideas for my website layout.
With this variation I have looked at darker pieced i've produced where more colour is added to these pieces, where I have added dark colours and with this piece I have done the opposite basically I looked at the lightened colours as another format of experimentation one truthfully I have mixed feelings about this piece because I like some aspects of it better than others, the typographic imagery on this piece is very strong but as an image perspective it isn't the strongest design perspect for trying to capture the audience's eye what I mean is I don't think the illustrative aspects on this piece isn't very strong besides the robot illustration the rest jisy doesnt jump out at me as a piece so I think for the next stage I want to add some more colour to bring out the other imagery in this piece.
This piece for me is much stronger than the image above as the colour aspects in the image is in the right places, not too much colour but not too little also, I like how it has enhanced some of the imagery I had fun experimenting with various techniques and processes using photoshop.
With this variation here, I like this for it's bright colours the yellow and the pink work well with the white and grey gradient colour schemes. I like the colour choice with this piece and I think the colours itself is good with this pieces it isn't too much but isn't too faint, it brings out the typographic element s more as well and just for me looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye for the reasons of the colour choice and the chosen blend aesthetic.
With this variation I have used a lightened blend on the pinks and yellows, which I didnt think id like but in fact it works well as it looks slightly less combusted mess and it sits into the image like the missing piece of a puzzle, I like how the colour in the imagery is presented its almost holographic in the way you view it and the whitened colouring against the tinted colours give it the holographic aesthetic where it has some kind of opacity but in an optical way.
With this aesthetic I decided to experiment using the reds to see what it would look like seeing as I experimented with red and black and thought it was strong and red and white work well also so I figure I do a couple experiments in the same aesthetic but with the red and it did work because it wasn't too dominant and wasn't making the image looking flat and dull, I think the red had enhanced the imagery.
With this version I have developed this a little further and I added a tint of yellow as well because I figure it would make the dynamic of this image for one look more aesthetically pleasing and gave me more excitement to experiment and enjoy the journey of creating some experiments and watching miracles come to life on a piece of art work.

With this piece I had an experiment where I looked at the hard mix aesthetic for the design of this piece, where I looked at various colour blends where I have experimented with the brown tints and I went for a unique variation with it where the imagery looked camouflage with the pattern. Which is one of the patterns I have favourable aesthetics with the colour scheme.
With this next version I went for the same stylistic choice as the piece above, where I went for the camouflage aesthetic but with this piece I added tints of blues to this piece and I am sadly not as keen as I liked the other piece above, with the camouflage aesthetic because with this piece the blue version is overlooked and isn't my strongest piece I designed because I think there was too much blue in the picture and it lost the effect of this piece.
With this piece here I went for the same aesthetic as the image with the red variation but with blue instead of red and I liked this piece more, because you can see more of the detail without concepts of the design being lost or half seen and I think the colour tones of blue work well intertwined with this piece where I have experimented with hue saturations and blend modes.
Here is a closeup of the piece above, where I focused on the detail I liked most in the image I liked where the imagery looks like a badge mood-board where the typography is the most effective where the image looks most exciting and I like just how ambiguous this part of the piece it is and I thought gathering a closeup perspective on the image above would look interesting visually as a viewfinder kind of thing.
With this piece here I had another trial and error here with the blue aesthetic like the 9magery above but this time with the blackened backdrop of my badge collection, this image layout looks very icy and very juxtaposed which is a word I associate in graphics as well as the performing industry, I see this work I have created throughout this experimental practice to be a juxtaposed experiment where I have combined two very different and surreal imagery and spliced them together for the ambiguity and fir the curious mind I had for wanting to just experiment after doing a workshop with Paul. I say this piece looks icy because of the tint of blue people associate as icy and because of the backdrop reminds me of slushy ice you get after snow has fallen
days later.
Finally, the final experiment with this piece, this here was basically the beginning of my juxtapositional experimentation, where I spliced two very different photographs of my collection and spliced them together one in the graphic layout and the other as just a photo and experimented further with the blend modes and Hue saturations and blend modes.
I had some fun experimenting with my imagery because the layout I designed to help me understand editorial layout designs processes actually experimenting with the aesthetics and the imagery and continuity really helped me find inspiration for potential layout ideas for when I create my website and publication,
