Cabnet of curiosity

Cabinets of curiosities

Cabinet of curiosities is known for being a place of wonder, where it's like you're in a place of wonder that based on the objects around here that you're living in that you're embracing and what you have and in a way it's about admiration of the objects not taking things for granted and actually finding the meaning behind of objets and purpose of the collectable.  To find a deeper understanding as to why you collect and keep items philosophically and it having a chronologic meaning, a lot of what goes into the cabinet of curiosities are things that make you want to learn about the origin of the objects and may be the invention of the object were originated, the history of the objects for a story to tell about where you found the objects.

As well as a collectable can bring back a memory can be a nostalgic feeling and I find with the cabinet of curiosities after looking at the picture you can get a good idea on a safe place for your collection it shows it's got your collections got home and it doesn't have to be a big collection of a small collection they come in different shapes sizes depending on the story of the object and the reason behind what you're collecting and by looking at the cabinet of curiosities that John Bargraves had in the 16th century a lot of what he collected were anatomy based objects where might be skulls of animals where he found on his travels where they died off and he wanted to keep them as a source of memory from a good time he had or from a not so nice Times he had in his past as I found out where he goes travelling in 1640 to 50 is he goes to North Africa and his cabinet of curiosities starts there because of his journey where his collection is taken in and I believe very much so that your collection is a big journey of your life it's like a timeline of something you've done in your past and how you display it just depends on how are you how connected you are of the collection and what it means to you and where it came from and more in Leicester story behind the collectable item.

Cabinet of Curiosity

John Bargrave's Cabnet in the 16th Century

Looking at the picture of his collection no cabinet of curiosities his collection looks very exciting where are you can see portraits and artwork he's created from his travelling you can see schools he's found and picked up along the way he's got coins that he's found just different things that brings back a flash from the past when he went to North Africa in the 16th century and I like the fact that even today still displayed in England like he would see ancient artefacts displayed in a museum where they've got a reason behind the collection there is a moral behind the story and it's displayed in the certain way that he wanted it for an
intended reason.

I have looked into this cabinet of curiosities so the reasons of trying to understand what collecting objects can mean to people, in another perspective of hoarding is like to someone and what it's like to keep something treasurable even if it's something minor that could be a throwback to something huge which as I mentioned Athena like to look at for this project his memories and what the item means to the person and the cabinet of curiosities is a perfect example of what I want to look at when I'm doing my website and my application is to try and show people that it doesn't have to be cost much it can be based on an event and it just shows that when you have the collection that there is a meaning and whether it's hidden or not he knows what it means because it's his collection and the point I'm trying to make is there is a personal meaning for that collection that you see above in the picture and it's memory is a big thing when it comes to collections because it triggers a memory and it has a special meaning because it's your own personal experiences you encountered in your life.

I Also watched a video on YouTube about the cabinet of curiosities and these are the notes I took with the video below:

Cabinet has recently had an renaissance for 70's collections.

collect, sort & shrine.

  • Collecting became a big thing in 16th Century, the earliest type of Collectors were monarchs and aristocrats
  • John Bargraves, his collection is still housed in Canterbury- fled England in Civil war spent 1640' 50s travelling in North Africa.
He collected various items, for example:
  • Fossilised skulls of animals and people from his travels for example,  the Chameleon Skull:  1662- Chameleon , Was given the chameleon as a token of "curiosity" in North Africa, in 1962 and took him on the ship with him. The chameleon died on ship when temperatures dropped rapidly and ended up being preserved in Brandy.
Chameleon fossil
  • Hippopotamus tooth- a curiosity in 17th Century.
The Frenchman's finger
  • The Frenchman's finger, a real finger- from a monastery in Toulouse  had a catacomb of preserved bodies where they were mummified in the soil. Was offered the complete body of a mummified child but didn't take it.
  • Model of an eye, made of the human eye made from ivory and turned to wood from Venice.
John Bargrave's Travel Journal

Heres some examples of his writing which he wrote a travel journal of the times he
explored North Africa, it could say about his past endeavours and what the collectables mean to him and where he found them.

His cabinet of curiosities was about spending time with objects, to take the fascination in the objects and to find fulfilment in the story of the objects, didn't have to cost anything but had to have meaning... meaning - it had to have a matter of curiosity and to find the full story of the objects by doing the science and history research behind them.

Wonder Room

Wonder rooms- the universe in miniature, where the collection expanded from outside the cabinet, the occupied rooms the universe in miniature "Was meant to be a mirror of the world and an instrument of knowledge" ~ Quote from the video
which when you start collecting you get the feeling of addiction where the hoarding comes in where you can get the adrenalin behind the objects you collect and shows your personal meaning with the collection and understanding of what they mean to you, where the hobby of collecting turn into an mild obsession. The way you display collections, depends on the story of the collection and how you want to reflect on the objects for a collectors way of understanding the world around them,

"Freaks of nature was marks of ill-odmen: ~ Quote from the video

I also in my findings found a tutorial on how to make a cabinet of curiosity
which was interesting and has made me want to try making a badge box of remedies. This is just a minor prototype based on the video nothing special but felt like giving it a shot.

Heres my attempt of making My Badge Box of Remedies, the name of the idea come from the cabinets of curiosity it's a bit of a play on that but I did it with my collection as opposed to John Bargrave's collection.

Do I made this was very simply using a box a cardboard box I had left it in thnd just lying around and I cut off some of the ends to make the two shelves as you can see where the badges are sitting I then take them with masking tape more because I tried using PVA and it didn't stick very well and then I decorated box of badges and put more badges in books so you kind of got your badge box of remedies when I say veg box of remedies it was as I say I catch upon to kind of give inspiration get inspiration for the cabinet of curiosities and that with my badge collection instead and the theme there is memories and seeing the badges in the box of remedies and it's fixing what memories may have been forgotten or creating a nostalgic aesthetic. I decided making this after seeing that YouTube video above of the girl making her box of curiosity so it just inspired me to give it a go in my perspective, admittedly the aesthetic of the box isn't the greatest because I didn't paint the box or decorate the outskirts much only used marble art paper as the walls, there wasn't an awful lot of thought behind that but that was only because of what time I have left to complete work and to try and make a start on my website and publication, this was just meant to be a simplistic attempt to show my thought process and my inspiration behind it with experimentation.

Here are some photographs of My Badge box of remedies in different perspectives below.

Video of the box

This video here is to show how I made the box send why it’s called Waze called basically what I have explained that in the written text above when I was talking about the box and it shows what a box can do the clever elements find it like the idea of using the page pin says handles on the doors as doorknobs which is a clever idea because it’s quite inventive thing considering it’s meant to be a badge box.

Step by step Visual guide on how I made this box

With this photo, it just explains visually how I’ve made the box send different photographs of me doing each stage of making a box basically.
