Birthday Exhibition
Sophie Calle
This artist here I have looked at after a recommendation from Jack, one of my tutors where artist Sophie Calle arranges her collection called the birthday ceremony and this is what I found out.
Here is the website I found out about the birthday ceremony:
This idea behind the birthday ceremony series of art is a vast amount (15) cabinet's based on the origin given to her by her dad, the which was a way to display gifts she had for 13 different birthdays which was put in each one for every year. with items from piece of art, letters, to books to trivial hoard able junk and stuff found around from that specific time to even stolen items, as well as chocolate and bottles of wine even. This project went on for over a decade in fact she hoarded things for her birthday from the year 1980-1993, which is a long time to keep a collection which means if you keep a collection for 13 years with reason it means you're likely to keep a collection for a much longer amount of time or even be life long keepsakes.
The idea of her work is a nice idea representing the theme of memory and nostalgia and the evolution of time and generation change based on how time moves from year to year which I really like how a hoard of items can represent stages of a year specifically looking at birthdays which is a memorable time for any human being, I find this idea very clever and something to look into for ideas on ways I could also present my collection and look at various ways of arranging my collection especially if I am covering the theme of memory and nostalgia with the item I am collecting which is badges which I classify a badge reminiscing on memories
I dins this exciting to look into and engaging to research about because the idea behind this way of displaying a collection is ingenious along with the fact that with my collection it can also represent milestones like how she has represented milestones in a much larger scale.
